Lots of Newbies in Northern Virginia
--Ina Nenninger,
USAT Coach and Race Director
This email was sent to the Women's Commission in August, 2005:
<< I found your page off a Tri It Now link.
I think it is a great idea to have all women workshops. I volunteered at the Aug
21 Mannassas event and had a great time. All the competitors were very polite and the race went well.
Ina Nenninger got me hooked on volunteering at triathlons. As I told
Ann
Snoeboyen and Vigo, I think the greek gods of sport would be pleased with
the triathletes that day. Ina looked and acted the part of an Olympian. Its nice to have a local 'Lance Armstrong'. I could make jokes that I want to be like Ina when I grow up, but you get the idea. Becoming a race
official in '06 is on my Things To Do (TTD) List.
Thanks for all your efforts,

and here's some clarification for his references...
Chris is a gem...a race director's dream volunteer! He found the
race I directed last week (The Bonzai Sport Summer Super Sprint Triathlon, 8/21) online and emailed to offer to help (he thought it was a little race with 20-30 participants....was he surprised to see that we had 359
registered!). Of course I took him up on his offer and he volunteered at packet pickup on Saturday as well as at the race on Sunday morning.
This race is aimed at beginners and has VERY short distances (400yS, 8m bike, 1.8m run)...and we had 50% females participate. Lots of families, too, since the ages go from 10 through adult (and we had 3 who were 60+). AND
we had 50% female participation (that's a rarity!). It's a FUN event that I've been growing since 1998 (only 29 participants in that first tri). Now we do 2 per season...maybe I'll add more next summer!
All of the details can be found on my website: www.triitnow.com
The women's workshops he referred to are Her Tri Clinics which I put on with
Anne Viviani and Sadj Bartolo. We started those in 2003 (with a WC grant!)
and now we have added coed clinics as well. Our schedule in 2005 has
included monthly one-day clinics (except for the 2 months that include my
mini-tri's....I can only handle so much!! gotta train, too...). You can
see more about our clinics via links on the same Tri It Now website.
