U.S. Age Groupers Collect Seven Medals

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 8, 2005)   U.S. age groupers went the distance on Sunday in Fredericia, Denmark and won seven medals, including five gold, at the International Triathlon Union Long Distance Triathlon World Championship.

 

The U.S. age group women medal winners were:

 

20-24: April Gellatly (Tyrone, Ga.; 1st; 7 hours, 13 minutes, 7 seconds)

55-59: Anne Viviani (Arlington, Va.; 1st; 8:25:28)

60-64: Janet Thompson (Tampa, Fla.; 1st; 9:57:53)

 

On the men's side:

 

25-29: P.J. Deschenes (Medford, Mass.; 3rd; 6:08:55)

60-64: Jay Tobin (Fallston, Md.; 2nd; 7:47:46)

70-74: Dieter Heycke (Honolulu, Hawaii; 1st; 9:36:14)

75-79: Lew Hollander (Bend, Ore.; 1st; 10:00:04)

 

Competitors completed a 4k swim, 120k bike and a 30k run.

 

The U.S. elites did not medal. Linda Gallo (Sunnyvale, Calif.) was the top elite finisher with her eighth-place placing. Matt Seeley was the top men's finisher in 25th.

 

The U.S. women's elite team of Gallo, Laurie Hug (Ambler, Pa.) and Heather Jorris (Yardley, Pa.) finished second in the team competition.
