Team Flannery

Before the Judy Flannery Memorial Fund even got off the ground, Judy's friends had rallied to memorialize her in a way as powerful and enduring as she was. One of the earliest and most ambitious tributes to Judy Flannery was the determination of her Race Across America (RAAM) teammates to persevere in their (and her) goal to complete the grueling coast-to-coat bicycle race. The race began July 16, 1997 in Irvine, CA and crossed Death Valley, the Rocky Mountains and the plains of the Midwest before finishing in Savannah, GA.

Team Flannery consisted of   Rita Simpson of Boulder, Co., Valerie Gattis, of Louisville, Ky., Lynn Brooks of Baltimore, Md., and Sally Edwards, of Sacramento, Ca., all pictured below (left to right).

These ladies spent nearly a week on their bicycles crossing the country in an effort to promote public awareness of the hazards of drunk driving. They raised all the funds for the $40,000 plus event. News coverage of their effort included articles in a variety of newspapers, including the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times and interviews on the Fox Sports television network. Supporters were able to follow their path across the country on the RAAM website.

Today, people continue to support the efforts began by Team Judy Flannery by contributing to the Judy Flannery Memorial Fund.
